They're very similar - same weight limit, same width, but the three section ladder is longer and compresses into a shorter length for storage. The rule is: “Always fit a 2 section unless a three section is needed”. You may need a 3 section where A/ the ceiling is high - up to 3m floor to floor, B/ there is restricted space in the loft, or C/ you want more ladder sticking up into the loft.We don't have a standard sized loft hatch , how do you know a ladder will fit?
There isn't actually a standard sized loft opening, it's whatever the original house builder felt like on the day. The Rule of Thumb is, if a person can fit though the loft opening then a loft ladder can be fitted.Do I need to paint the hatch after ladder installation?
There is no painting required after we install our 2 or 3 section or telescopic ladders. The wooden ladder also doesn’t need the hatch painted but the architrave surround will only have a white primer on it so will need to be painted for best results.Is the loft opening enlarged or altered in any way when a

With a standard metal loft ladder install, the opening & hatch surround architrave remains exactly the same, only the hatch is altered and hinged so it swings down.The aluminium 2 & 3 section ladders look rather flimsy?
Appearances can be deceptive: actually they’re very strong and light. All of our loft ladder range has the same weight loading - 150KG or 23 stone, and are built to last. The 2-3 section ladders have to be light so they’re easy to push up into the loft. They’re 30cm wide since there isn't much space in most loft openings. Certainly you could have a heavy tank-like construction but then 90% of our users wouldn't be able to push them into the loft.If a tree falls over in a wood and there's no-one to hear it, does it make a sound?
Although not equipped for questions of philosophy, clearly it does: the moon doesn't disappear if we all close our eyes.Do your ladders have “sturdy D shaped rungs” like other loft ladders?
No, they have better, wider, flat steps that are easier to step up on.Why don't you fit zig-zag ladders?
We’ve only ever been asked to replace zig zag ladders with proper conventional ladders. The zig-zag ladders, although perfectly safe, can move from side to side in an alarming manner, take up too much hatch space, and are heavy to push up and over a lifting bar.Are there any better ladders than the ones you fit?
No. If there were, we’d fit them, no question.”The quality remains long after the price is forgotten.”Can loft ladders be repaired?
It depends on the part that's broken, but 99% of the time, no. With old wooden ones it's likely that repairing screws will weaken the ladder further, with newer wooden ladders the mechanism is pretty much impossible to safely replace on its own. Having said that, none of the 5000+ Youngman ladders we’ve installed have ever gone wrong - it looks like they’ve finally got it right.We don't intend to use your services, but can you give us any tips?
