Lighting is crucial to using your loft space - as you can see from our pictures, it transforms it from a dark and mysterious place to a usable storage area where you can see everything and so you know what you’ve got. Life suddenly becomes a whole lot easier.
Battery loft lights (350 lumens) - and why
we don’t fit them!
We can’t advise enough against these, in our opinion they just are no good for the job: •It would be just typical that when you need to use it the battery is flat. •To switch them on there is a very short pull cord, but the light needs to be positioned high up in the roof for maximum spread - how are you going to find the pull cord in the pitch black? (Don’t say get a torch…)•The output is so low at 350 lumens it just won’t light anything, especially not a large black loft (Think small torch). The output is supposed to be the same as a 32watt bulb - a 40w bulb is the dimmest you can buy, and a 100w bulb is the least you could light a small loft with. Our 5ft florescent lights put out 5200 lumens, nearly 15 times as much light.
LED strip light £120 (5200 lumens)
The 5ft LED light makes the loft much lighter and brighter than you’d expect. This is because in the loft, the roof (usually black) doesn’t reflect any light back down like a normal room and so the area of the light source is that much more important. Hence the florescent light with its larger area makes your loft much brighter. Whenever we’re boarding and installing a light we do the strip light first as it gives us a much better environment in which to work! All of these light switches - not installed by us- are too far from the hatch and are very difficult to find in the dark. All of our light switches are right next to the loft opening and immediately obvious.
